Jolene Martin, Participation and Projects Officer Save the Children Cymru shares her life-changing journey from experiencing poverty to joining the Voices For Bettws parents group and developing training to help fellow parents champion the needs of their children with additional learning needs. And she recently got to talk about with the UK Prime Minister when he visited Wales.

Choosing to bring new life into an uncertain future is never an easy decision to make - but the hope and possibility that all children bring can be galvanising.

My name is Thea, I’m a single parent to three children aged 10, 3 and (almost) 2. I work full time with 17 years’ experience in my industry, I’m highly qualified and we live in London near my work, where I’ve called home since 2009. Like hundreds of thousands of others, my children are impacted by the two-child benefit and the benefit cap. This impossible situation has led to me starting a government petition to recognize how these measures put children into grinding poverty for the sole reason of having much loved siblings.

African children need more than handouts: they need allies.

The number of children subjected to catastrophic and life-changing sexual violence in conflict soared to at least 1,938 cases in 2024, with the verified number of cases the highest since records began and up 50% since 2020, said Save the Children.

At our child-friendly space in Zaatari camp, children are re-learning how to laugh, play and be themselves.
