THE UK RESTORES A CRITICAL LIFELINE FOR GAZA AFTER HOLDING BACK UNRWA FUNDING FOR 6 MONTHS

19 Jul 2024 Global

LONDON, 19 July 2024 - Following the announcement made by the new Foreign Secretary, David Lammy, Alison Griffin, Head of Conflict and Humanitarian Campaigns at Save the Children UK, said:

“It is welcome news that the Foreign Secretary will resume funding to UNRWA, the main aid provider for millions of Palestinians in Gaza and across the region.

“The situation in Gaza continues to deteriorate, with children living through a relentless cycle of death, destruction and displacement. More than 20,000 children in Gaza are estimated to be unaccounted for in this chaos, whilst doctors, nurses and aid workers are working in near impossible circumstances, under fire and under resourced. Our staff are seeing children brought to health clinics with their legs blown off and the only pain relief they have is paracetamol. We cannot let this continue.

“UNRWA’s work has never been more critical, and this announcement will provide some relief to children and their families caught up in this brutal conflict.

“We’re urging the new government to go further and use all of its diplomatic power to press for an immediate and definitive ceasefire, allow full humanitarian access, release the remaining hostages, and suspend arms to the Government of Israel.”
