SAVE THE CHILDREN RESPONSE TO PRIME MINISTER’S GUILDHALL SPEECH: "A PAUSE WON’T TACKLE STARVATION OR DISEASE”

LONDON, 13 November 2023

In response to Prime Minister Rishi Sunak's Guildhall foreign policy speech, Al Russell, Head of Public Affairs at Save the Children said:

“Rishi Sunak said in his speech tonight that too many civilians are dying in Gaza and not enough aid is getting in. Tragically, he’s right about both but it’s naive to think that either of these can be changed without a ceasefire.

“ No length of humanitarian pause is long enough to mount an effective aid operation, and while a pause may bring a temporary halt to the violence, it cannot rebuild homes schools and hospitals, or tackle starvation or disease.

“Children in Gaza and Israel need a ceasefire now, and that won’t happen without diplomatic pressure from countries like the UK.”
